Holiday Travel Tips - Chiropractic Style

The holidays really are "the most wonderful time of the year!" That is unless you’re traveling, of course. The holiday season is one of the busiest travel times and can be overwhelming and frustrating. The week between Christmas and New Years is jammed packed with travelers. Chances are if you are reading this you are traveling right now. Traveling can be rough on our bodies so I put together a quick tip list to make your holiday travel a little easier.

In The Sky...

Whether you are hauling your bags across the airport or lifting them up and down, holiday travel can put stress on your back. If you are going on a long trip, checking your bags will be well worth it. Keep your carry-on bag as light as possible, and remember to lift with your legs, not with your back.

When possible make your carry on a backpack. This way you can let your large muscle groups do the work. Be sure to carry the backpack over both shoulders so you keep your spine and posture balanced.

When you have a long flight, be sure to get up and walk around to stretch your legs and back. You can stroll up and down the aisles to restore circulation to your legs and arms. We’re all aware that coach seats aren’t the most comfortable, so give your legs a mini-massage every now and then. You can also rock your feet back and forth from heel to toe to get some in-flight exercise. Even scrunching your toes and then releasing them will help you let go of stress.

On The Road Again...

Unless you’ve got a shiny red nose and are leading the sleigh, you are probably going to face some holiday traffic. Start by dressing comfortably. Loose clothing will allow you to move more freely and do small stretches while you’re driving, like shoulder rolls.

To help prevent back pain, give your back some support. No need to get fancy - this can be accomplished with a small pillow or rolled up towel.

You also want to make sure you are well-rested. If you are feeling tired, don’t hesitate to stop, stretch, and have a snack (keep it keto-friendly of course). You might even decide to just call it a night. If you are the passenger, help the driver by ensuring they are alert. Besides, what’s a good road trip without a few car games?

Beat The Travel Blues

Traveling can be tough on your body, particularly during the holidays. To make things less stressful, prepare your body as best as you can. Maintain your regular chiropractic appointments (contact us to schedule an adjustment!) so your body in functioning as it should before your holiday travels begin. Nobody wants to suffer from neck or back pain during the holidays, and we can help!

Supplementing While On The Road

When I travel I always take a few "standard" supplements. These are my must have "go-tos" when I'm on the road. I actually dedicated an entire episode of Frequently Asked Question Friday on this topic alone titled The Best Supplements To Take While Traveling. You can check out that Facebook LIVE video here.

Final Thoughts
